This divot tool is made from Purpleheart (Peltogyne paniculata), a very popular wood native to Central and South America from Mexico to southern Brazil. They are most common in the Amazon Basin and also found in Columbia, Guyana, Surinam and Venezuela.
There are over 20 different species of Peltogyne and the wood is also known as Amaranth, Violetwood, Tananeo and Saka. It isn't in the ironwood class of woods but it is still very dense and heavy with a specific gravity of about .86. The sapwood is creamy white but the heartwood is the main attraction. When first cut it's a vivid purple and as the wood dries and oxidizes further the color darkens to a deep purple/brown. The grain can be wavy or irregular but is usually very straight and the texture is medium to medium/coarse. It is an open-pored wood and the pores are very prominent, especially in the end grain. It has medium to high luster and takes a nice polish.
