This cigar holder/divot tool is made from authentic Bethlehem Olive Wood (Olea europaea), a very hard, dense wood with a very fine and unusually smooth texture. This wood comes from an actual tree that has been producing fruit in Bethlehem since the time of Jesus. When olive trees reach about 200 years old the trunks begin to die and new trees begin to sprout at the base of the old tree, eventually becoming large mature trees and giving rise to its reputation as the immortal tree. When trees become old and unproductive the old wood is pruned away to encourage new growth and insure environmental stability. These prunings provide a slow but steady source of wood for carving, a tradition that was started in the 4th century when the Nativity Church was built on the site where Jesus was born. The monks passed the art of olive wood carving down to the local residents where it has continued to the present time. In fact, it is believed that when Jesus worked as a carpenter he carved olive wood.

The wood from young olive trees is usually creamy yellow in color but as the trees become older the wood becomes increasingly patterned with black lines and background hues of red and brown. Bethlehem olive wood, coming from the prunings of very old trees, is particularly well-patterned and has been highly prized as a carving wood since ancient times. The patterning is very unpredictable and no two pieces of wood will ever look the same.

It was recently brought to my attention that many golfers would appreciate cigar holder tools capable of easily handling cigars in ring gauge sizes of 50 or more. With golf courses becoming increasingly more crowded marshals have become less tolerant of slow play, requiring golfers to be more efficient with their time. We all know that the game of golf is hard enough without the added pressure of trying to balance one's cigar while everyone else is waiting, especially for older golfers who's hands might not be as steady as they once were. This tool has been designed with a larger cradle area than my normal cigar holders, 1" long x 3/4" wide and 1/4" deep. I feel this is about as large as the cradle can be made without becoming too intrusive in one's pocket. For visual balance the entire tool has been scaled up in size to just under 3" in length. The larger cradle would also be advantageous for cigar smokers who often play under windy conditions. The perfect gift for any golfer on your shopping list!
