This is a hand-made divot tool made from Kudu Horn. Kudu's are tragelaphine antelopes native to the area around South Africa. The horns grow in long spirals, attaining lengths as long as 72", and are prized as musical instruments, containers and symbolic ritual objects. Some cultures believed the horns were the dwelling places of powerful spirits and in others they were symbols for male potency.
Kudu horns are unusual in having three distinct color layers. The outer layer is thin and dark, followed by a creamy-to-clear translucent layer and the very center is almost pure white. This particular divot tool shows all three layers. Dimensions are approximately 2-3/4" long and 7/8" wide.
