This divot tool is made from the leg bone of a giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis). The species name of 'camelopardalis' derives from the early Romans who named it from a combination of Camel and Leopard.
Weighing in at upwards of 3,000 lbs and a height of 16-18 feet, camels are capable of running up to 40 mph for short bursts. This can put tremendous leverage forces on the bones in their legs and they have adapted by becoming some of the hardest, densest bone known. This density, combined with the fibrous nature of bone, makes it an extremely strong and tough material, ideal for use as a divot tool. The density also allows it to take an exceptional, glass-like polish.
This particular tool is made from giraffe bone that has been dyed under high heat in a vacuum, a process which creates unpredictable and, oftentimes, spectacular patterns. The dyed bone is often used in the making of custom knife handles. Dimensions are approximately 2-7/8" long and 3/4" wide. The cradle is 5/8" wide and 3/16" deep, sized for cigars up to 48 ring gauge.
