This cigar holder/divot tool is made from Marblewood (Marmaroxylon racemosum), a dense wood native to Surinam, French Guyana and the lower Amazon. Trees can grow as high as 100' with a clear bole of 60', 2' in diameter. It is the only species of the genus Marmaroxylon. The wood gets its name from the meandering, wavy streaks of reddish/brown to black against a background of yellow beige and makes more sense when seen as a wide board. On something as small as this divot tool the context and meaning is somewhat lost, although it does produce interesting patterns and colors. It's not quite in the ironwood class and does float in water. I can't find information on its specific gravity but after working with it I would guess it to be around .85. Beautifully finished with Watco Oil and paste wax.
