This cigar holder/divot tool is made from Kudu Horn. Kudu's are tragelaphine antelopes native to the area around South Africa. The horns grow in long spirals, attaining lengths as long as 72", and are prized as musical instruments, containers and symbolic ritual objects. Some cultures believed the horns were the dwelling places of powerful spirits and in others they were symbols for male potency.
Kudu horns are unusual in having three distinct color layers. The outer layer is thin and dark, followed by a creamy translucent layer and the very center is usually pure white. In this piece the center was mostly hollow, allowing beautifully graceful curves throughout the tool's body. The curves combine with the asymmetrical and highly contrasted coloring to create a stunning and elegant tool. It is easily my current favorite.
This tool is 2-7/8" long and 7/8" wide. The cigar cradle is 7/8" long, 3/4" wide and just under 1/4" deep, suitable for large cigars up to ring gauge 62.
A very nice bonus is a semi-oval hole formed where the horn's natural hollow meets the thumb indent. The hole is 1/4" wide and 1/2" long, tapering to a point at the bottom like an upside down apple seed. This shape allows it to securely hold a cigarette. Just wedge the cigarette into the hole, stick the tool into the ground and you're ready to swing with no distractions.
