This cigar holder/divot tool is made from Pink Ivory (Berchemia zeyheri), a hard, heavy wood that's not supposed to be in the ironwood class, but my most recent piece of wood does, in fact, sink in water so I know it has a specific gravity of at least 1.01 (for comparison Red Oak has a specific gravity of .56). The prized portion comes from the heartwood which ranges in color from light pink to watermelon and is often called the rarest wood in the world. Native to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa, where it is known as umNini or umGoloty, the wood has a very fine texture which combines with its density to produce an exceptionally smooth polish. This divot tool is approximately 2-3/4" long and 3/4" wide. Beautifully finished with Watco oil and paste wax.
An interesting story about Pink Ivory says that it was the royal tree of the Zulus and only the royal family was allowed to possess it. Possession by anyone else, including foreigners, was punishable by death. Quite a provocative story, but it turns out it was all started to increase the value of the wood! This is a very plausible explanation and I'm sure the story isn't true, but still, you might think twice before taking this along on your "dream" golf vacation.
