This cigar holder/divot tool is made from Black & White Ebony (Diospyros embyopteris) a rare member of the Ebony family, native to Southeast Asia and India. The wood is known for its contrast of light and dark colored grain. While most Ebonies are in the ironwood class this member is slightly lighter. I can't find information on the specific gravity but it does float in water and going by feel I would guess it's around .85 (for comparison Red Oak has a specific gravity of .56). The grain is very tight and close pored which allows it to take an unusually smooth polish. Beautifully finished with Teak Oil and pure Carnuba wax. Overall size is approximately 2-13/16" long and 3/4" wide. The cigar cradle is 11/16" long, 9/16" wide and 1/8" deep, suitable for a Panatella or Corona up to ring gauge 42. Weight is 5.52 grams.
An interesting note for golfers is that a North American member of the Diospyros family is the American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana), the traditional wood that "woods" were made of before the advent of metal and carbon fiber club heads. With a specific gravity of about .79 it's not in the ironwood class but its interlocking grain structure combined with its uncommon hardness made for a virtually indestructable club head with the unique ability to efficiently transfer potential energy to a golf ball.....that is, when properly swung.
